Case Study: Supporting a Child with Exercise-Induced Asthma

Background:

A local school identified a child diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma who struggled to participate fully in physical activities. The child’s parents sought our assistance to ensure their child could engage safely in sports and exercise.

Implementation:

  1. Education for Staff: I provided training for teachers and P. E staff on recognising asthma symptoms, proper use of inhalers, and strategies to accommodate the child during physical activities.
  2. Developing an Action Plan: We collaborated with the child’s parents and asthma nurse to create an individualised asthma action plan. This plan outlined pre-exercise precautions, including the use of a reliever inhaler before activities.
  3. Modified Activities: We worked with physical education staff to adapt activities, ensuring the child could participate without overexertion. This included providing rest breaks and alternative exercises if needed.
  4. Peer Awareness: I conducted a brief session with the child’s classmates to promote understanding and support for their friend, helping to foster a more inclusive environment.

Impact:

As a result of these implementations, the child experienced increased confidence and participation in sports. Teachers reported improved management of the child’s asthma during physical activities, leading to fewer incidents of distress. The supportive environment not only empowered the child but also encouraged peers to be more compassionate and aware of asthma management.
