From University of Aberdeen Hallways to Asthma Awareness Frontlines: A Veteran’s Bold New Mission at Scottish Asthma Charity

Pam Cumming

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Pamela Cumming as the new Health Promotion Manager for the Aberdeen and Shire regions. With over 30 years of experience in education and school engagement, Pam brings a deep commitment to improving the lives of those affected by asthma and allergies.

Pam, who took early retirement from her role at the University of Aberdeen, embraced the opportunity to focus on her well-being during her time off. She enjoyed sea swimming, aqua Zumba, and reconnecting with friends, using the time to recharge. “Sometimes in life, we have to look after ourselves before we can look after others,” Pam reflected. This period of rest and reflection ultimately reignited her passion for helping others, leading her to join the foundation.

Having lived with asthma since childhood, Pam has a personal connection to the cause. “I was shocked to learn that three people die from asthma every day, and 90% of those deaths are preventable. It’s even more alarming that one child is admitted to the hospital every 20 minutes for an asthma attack,” she said. “I’m excited to work toward reducing these figures and supporting schools in my community to improve school attendance and education outcomes for youngsters with asthma.”

In her new role, Pam will deliver asthma awareness training to adults, young people and children with asthma and engage with local businesses and schools to raise awareness and improve health outcomes for people living with asthma. “I’m thrilled to re-establish my connections with schools and return to what I love most — engaging with young people and making a difference in their lives.”

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, welcomed Pam to the team, saying, “Pam’s background in education, paired with her personal experience with asthma, makes her an ideal fit for this role. Her passion and drive will undoubtedly benefit the communities we serve.”

Vicki McGrain, Head of Services and Health Promotion, added, “We are excited to have Pam onboard. Her expertise and enthusiasm will greatly enhance our efforts to promote asthma awareness and reduce preventable asthma-related incidents.”

Pam’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation in its 15th year of operation as it continues its mission to improve the lives of individuals affected by asthma across Scotland, helping them to live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
